Review by Simone
“The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas” is a moving novel by John Boyne.
It tells the story of a nine year-old-boy who has to move from Berlin to a new house, called “Out-With” (Auschwitz), near a concentration camp. The family has to move because of the Father’s work, he’s the commandant of the camp. Bruno, the young boy, doesn’t like it there because he hasn’t got any friends any more. But then things change again. Bruno finds a special new friend and suddenly he doesn’t want to go back to Berlin.
John Boyne’s novel is a book for everyone who is interested in seeing how a nine-year-old son of a concentration camp commandant experiences the Second World War. It describes the happenings without any prejudice which makes a special friendship possible.
I personally really liked reading this novel because the first half of the book leaves many questions open which are answered in the second half. I was interested in arranging the different steps that happened to Bruno, which he tells in the wrong order.
This novel is a book that needs to be read carefully to get all information. It isn’t a book for young children although it is told by a young boy because they would not understand the shocking ending.

Review II of the book „The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas”

The book “The Boy in the striped Pyjamas” by the author John Boyne is about a friendship between a German and a Jewish boy. It was published in 2006 but is about the time of the National Socialism. In this time the Jewish people were persecuted in Germany.

The book tells a story about a German boy called Bruno. Because his father, a Nazi-Officer was sent to a place called “Out With” Bruno had to move with his family to this place. There he meets a Jewish boy called Shmuel. Shmuel and his family get locked in a concentration camp for Jewish people. Bruno and Shmuel become very good friends and meet every afternoon. But this friendship ends very tragic.

I like the book because of many interesting situations which reveal the political and historical background. But some passages are boring and are not fun to read. There are also crude passages, but in my opinion they are really important to reveal the crude time in Germany. I would recommend this book to people who have historical knowledge.

Rewiev III: The boy in the striped pyjamas
The book “The boy in the striped pyjamas” from 2006 was written by John Boyne.
The story is set in the time of the National Socialism and deals with a nine- jear old boy called Bruno. He and his family live in a big house in front of the concentration camp Auschwitz ,because the father works there as a commandant.
On a sunny afternoon Bruno meets a boy at the fence around the camp. Shmuel is also nine years old. However he lives at the other side of the fence , he and Bruno become friends an meet every day at the same place. Nobody knows of their secret friendship. When things start to change Bruno has to leave the house and move back to Berlin.
Before he goes he wants to find out , how Life at the other side of the fence is like. So he and Shmuel plan a final adventure. They don´t know, that they will never come back.
The story is written from the point of view of Bruno, a child. He is a little bit naïve, has no idea of the work his father is doing and the treatment of jews at the time.
This fact offers the readers to have a certain look ,through the eyes of a child, on the happenings of the National Socialism. But I can imagine, that understanding the book without any background information could be quite difficult.
The book is sometimes really cruel and makes you feel sad, but I have also enjoyed reading it.
To see how the friendship between Bruno and Shmuel develops step by step is really emotional and makes you feeling cheerful.
I liked how the situations and different places are described so much into detail, so that you have a clear imagination and feel like being there right now.
In my opinion, the book is really simply told, but concludes an extraordinary, haunting story that you are not able to stop reading.
Amazing!!!
